The Catholic church is full of beautiful symbolic artwork, and secular Easter celebrations also have great symbols! Let’s teach about those symbols and help students connect the visuals to a deep faith-filled understanding! This Easter Egg & Symbols activity is a creative way for students to explore Easter symbols (and create an easy bulletin board.)
This Easter Symbols activity is my most popular Easter lesson. It’s designed to make the lesson both fun and enlightening for students. At the heart of it is the Easter egg—a simple yet powerful symbol of new beginnings. But it’s not just about coloring; it’s about understanding the deeper meanings behind each symbol.

Getting to Know Symbols: In this activity, students will think about Lenten symbols like the Crown of Thorns, representing Jesus’ sacrifice, and the Palm Branches, symbolizing his triumphant entry into Jerusalem. There are also Easter symbols, such as candy, butterflies, and the empty tomb. These symbols aren’t just pictures; they’re stories waiting to be told.
Making Learning Easy: We know every student is different. That’s why this activity offers different ways to engage. There is a symbol worksheet with information about each symbol and a similar page without descriptions for students to complete independently. There is also a coloring page with symbols that can be used as a coloring page, as well as an empty egg so students can let their creativity show! Whether it’s coloring, reading, or discussing, there’s something for everyone. No one gets left behind.
Seeing the World Anew: Understanding Easter symbols isn’t just for the classroom. It’s about seeing the world with fresh eyes—finding meaning in religious and secular images and understanding the stories behind them.
