Easy Christmas Activities & FREE January Bulletins
We’re almost to Christmas Break, so we need some EASY Christmas Activities to keep kids engaged even while they are full of sugar and Christmas cheer. Here’s a list of tips and activities that will get their attention and keep the learning happening as we get to break.
Five Tips & Christmas Activities
1. Holiday Lessons
Sprinkle in some holiday vibes to make lessons interesting. Use this Holy Family Skit during ELA to keep kids engaged and sneak in an extra religion lesson. My students always seem to follow along so well if we’re reading a skit. I’m not sure why it’s different than regular paragraphs, but I’ll take the win! You could also try this Birthday Madlibs as a grammar lesson while students create “Happy Birthday, Jesus” Madlibs.
2. Active Learning
Studies say active learning is a game-changer. Get ’em moving with group projects or hands-on stuff. The more they’re up and about, the less likely they are to start dreaming about holiday feasts. Try these hexagonal discussion cards to keep kids moving and talking while they review Advent.
3. Cheers for Small Wins
Take a moment to acknowledge their wins, no matter how small. Positive vibes make a world of difference. Include as much praise as you can fit into each activity! Go out of your way to tell kids exactly what they are doing right and they’ll magically do more of it! Top off that praise with some tangible prizes to keep students motivated. Check out these Christmas erasers; my daughter is obsessed with 3D erasers. It’s also amazing how excited kids get about puffy stickers–even big kids!
4. Real World Learning
Relate what they’re learning to the real world. Show them the bigger picture. Suddenly, learning becomes less of a chore and more of a life skill. Use these Hot Cocoa Writing pages for students to write stories or thank you notes to family or staff throughout the building. (My son drew the hot cocoa on these pages–isn’t it so cute!) You could also focus on teaching MORE about Advent and the meaning of the season. Check out this post for more ideas.
5. Mini Breaks for Maximum Focus
Combat the pre-holiday jitters with quick brain breaks. Even though students probably won’t verbalize it, a lot of students have anxiety about a break. They lose the structure of school and that adds stress and worry that will show up in behavior. A bit of movement or a short mindfulness moment can reset their focus without taking up too much time. Christmas Carols are a great brain-break as we lead up to Christmas. Download this Christmas Carol sheet as a simple one-pager with easy popular (religious) Carols that are perfect for a quiet brain break.
