Advent Lesson Plans: 10 Topics & Free November Bulletins

Advent Lesson Plans

Are you ready with your Advent Lesson Plans? Advent is a special time leading up to Christmas and is often observed in the Christian tradition as a period of preparation and anticipation. During this time, you can focus on teaching various themes and concepts that are meaningful and relevant to the season. Here are the top 10 things to consider teaching during Advent.

Use this as a checklist as you set up your lessons for this next liturgical season, or simply use this Advent Bundle which includes all the information and resources you need to teach about Advent!

  1. The Story of Advent: Teach the significance of Advent, its history, and its place in the liturgical calendar. Particularly, explain how it is a time of reflection, hope, and expectation of Christ’s coming.
  2. Biblical Prophecies: Explore the Old Testament prophecies about the birth of Jesus, such as those found in Isaiah and Micah, and discuss their fulfillment in the New Testament.
  3. The Nativity Story: Teach the story of Jesus’ birth, as described in the Gospels of Matthew and Luke. Then, focus on the humble circumstances of His birth and the messages conveyed by the visitations of angels to shepherds and wise men.

4. Advent Wreath: Explain the symbolism of the Advent wreath, with its candles representing hope, peace, joy, and love, and the central Christ candle representing the arrival of Jesus on Christmas.

5. Symbols and Colors: Discuss the significance of traditional Advent symbols, such as the star, the manger, and the colors purple and pink, and what they represent in the Christian faith.

6. Waiting with Patience: Explore the virtue of patience and how Advent encourages us to embrace waiting as an essential part of life, just as people waited for the arrival of the Messiah.

7. Charitable Acts and Kindness: Teach the importance of performing acts of kindness and charity during Advent, reflecting on how the season inspires us to give to others as a way of emulating God’s love.

8. Preparing Our Hearts: Encourage introspection and personal growth during Advent. Discuss ways to prepare our hearts for Christ’s coming, such as through prayer, repentance, and forgiveness.

9. Simplicity and Humility: Discuss the lessons we can learn from the simplicity and humility of Jesus’ birth, reminding us of the value of these virtues in our lives.

10. Advent Hymns and Music: Introduce traditional Advent hymns and music. Occasionally, you could even have the class sing some carols which can help set the tone for the season and foster a spirit of worship and contemplation. In fact, this easy Christmas Carols sheet is a great way to start teaching the carols.

Remember that you have a whole season to teach students about Advent and you can infuse this message through all of your lessons!
