Lent & March Bulletins

Lent starts soon! Here’s a quick list of my favorite Lent resource.

Lent Lesson Plan

Lent & Holy Week Lesson Plan: This packet is a great overview of Lent and Holy Week. Students dig into the bible to read and summarize the story of Jesus’ crucifixion and death. These lessons work for students who are new to the faith because they learn the big picture and important events of Holy Week. However, students who have heard the stories year after year still find new details and meaning that they missed throughout the years. I’ve used this packet with students from 7th-12th grades and students complete the work at their ability level.

Blackout Poetry

Blackout Poetry: **FREE** I use this lesson as a conclusion to the packet. Students have been digging through the bible; reading and summarizing some heavy stories. This project is a chance to review the bible and create artwork connecting to the emotion of the events. Each time I introduce this, there are some students who are familiar with blackout poetry and jump into the project. For students who need more guidance, I encourage them to circle 5-10 keywords on the page and color the rest of the page. They often need reminders that free-form poetry doesn’t need rules and rhyming. This gives students a chance for creative expression and allows students of all abilities to create something beautiful. After students have begun their poetry, we watch Episodes 8 and 9 from the Bible Miniseries. Students who want to spend hours on artwork can create. Students who color quickly and want to watch the movie can relax and watch. All the students have a review of Jesus’ Passion.

Lent and Holy Week Sorting Cards

Lent and Holy Week Sorting Cards: These cards can be used for many activities. I have students start with a basic sort—matching the titles and explanations, putting the events in order. After students can confidently identify each holy day, we play a few games with the cards. We race to put everything in order, then play Memory or Baby Monkey Astronaut. Sometimes I’ll even ask the students to sort the cards using only their feet—this gets students out of their seats and forces them to slow down while thinking through the events. There are groans every time, but there’s also laughter so I think they secretly love it.

March Catholic Kids Bulletin

The FREE Printable Catholic Kids Bulletin worksheets match up to the weekly Mass readings in the Catholic Church. There are coloring pages that match the weekly Gospel reading. There are Mass activities throughout the month, as well as Psalm copy work and a word search. In addition, the order of the liturgy of the Mass along the top of each bulletin also helps kids follow along during Mass. Next, they can learn the order and structure of the Mass. Finally, a coloring page about a Catholic Saint teaches about Catholic History and saints. For example, these are terrific to teach at Mass, in addition to a pre-teaching activity to help prepare your students for the Sunday Mass.
