Summer isn’t just about warm weather and breaks from school—it’s also packed with some really beautiful Summer Catholic Feasts. These Liturgical feasts help us connect with our faith in ways that feel meaningful and joyful. If you want to share that with your kids in a way that sticks, you’re in the right place. Let’s dive into some of the big summer liturgical events, what they’re about, and some easy, fun ways to celebrate them with your family or class.
First, use the Catholic Kids Bulletins each weekend! The bulletins list the Liturgical season or feast and help your kids understand the focus of the Catholic Feast.
Liturgical Season Reading Comprehension
Before we dive into all the other fun ways to celebrate these feast days, here’s an easy way to get started: check out my Catholic Feast Day Reading Comprehension Bundle! It covers five major summer feast days—Jesus’ Ascension, Pentecost, Trinity Sunday, Corpus Christi, and the Sacred Heart of Jesus—with leveled reading passages, discussion questions, writing prompts, and more. It’s perfect for classrooms, homeschool, or parish groups, and helps kids understand the meaning behind each celebration while building faith and literacy skills at the same time.
Pentecost: The Birthday of the Church
Pentecost usually falls 50 days after Easter Sunday. It celebrates the moment the Holy Spirit came down on the apostles, giving them courage and power to spread Jesus’ message. It’s often called the “birthday of the Church” because it marks the beginning of the Church’s mission in the world.
How to teach and celebrate Summer Catholic Feasts: Pentecost
- Storytelling: Read the story from Acts 2 about the flames of the Holy Spirit appearing over the apostles’ heads. You can use colorful tissue paper flames for a craft.
- Red decorations: Red is the liturgical color of Pentecost, symbolizing fire. Decorate with red balloons or streamers. This craft kit looks so cute!
- Wind and fire activities: Use fans or paper pinwheels to talk about the Spirit’s invisible power, like wind. Or create “flames” with orange and yellow construction paper.
- Prayers: Teach kids a simple prayer to the Holy Spirit asking for courage and guidance.
Trinity Sunday: Celebrating God’s Mystery
Trinity Sunday is the Sunday after Pentecost. It celebrates the one God in three Persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. It’s a chance to introduce kids to this big, beautiful mystery of our faith in a simple way.
How to teach and celebrate Summer Catholic Feasts: Trinity Sunday
- Triangle crafts: The triangle is a symbol of the Trinity—three sides, one shape. Have kids make paper triangles and decorate each side with Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Or, watch this video to draw a Trinity image. I’ve used this with 1st grade and high school and the kids love it!
- Simple explanations: Use everyday examples like water (ice, liquid, steam) to show how one thing can be three forms.
- Prayer: Pray the Sign of the Cross together, explaining it’s a way to honor the Trinity.
Corpus Christi: Honoring the Body of Christ
Corpus Christi, which means “Body of Christ,” is a feast celebrating the Eucharist—the true presence of Jesus in the bread and wine. It usually happens in June and is a great opportunity to help kids understand the gift of Communion.
How to teach and celebrate Summer Catholic Feasts: Corpus Christi
- Bread and wine: Discuss with kids how the bread and wine are transformed at Mass. You can even bake simple unleavened bread together to help them connect with this. It’s a great discussion on the similarities and differences with the Eucharist. I also LOVE showing videos of Communion wafers being made–I find it fascinating.
- Procession: If your parish has a Corpus Christi procession, take the kids to see it or even join in if possible.
- Crafts: Make monstrances (the special vessels used to hold the Eucharist) out of paper plates and decorate. Here’s a link to a super easy craft.
- Adoration time: Spend a few minutes in quiet prayer or adoration with the kids if there’s a monstrance available at church. This link has some Adoration resources if you want something for your kids to hold/write/read/do during Adoration.
Sacred Heart of Jesus: A Heart Full of Love
The Feast of the Sacred Heart celebrates Jesus’ love and mercy for us. It usually falls in June, 19 days after Pentecost. The image of the Sacred Heart helps kids see how much Jesus cares for each of us.
How to teach and celebrate Summer Catholic Feasts: Sacred Heart of Jesus
- Heart crafts: Make Sacred Heart pictures with red paper hearts, gold flames, and a crown of thorns. Explain each symbol’s meaning. This link has some beautiful ideas!
- Stories: Share stories of Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque, who spread devotion to the Sacred Heart. This Saint Skit includes her story.
- Kind acts: Encourage kids to do acts of kindness that show Jesus’ love in the world.
- Prayers: Teach simple prayers asking Jesus to help us love others like He does. This link has some beautiful prayer ideas!
