Huge SALE & 8 Engaging Advent Games: Teach & Entertain
Advent is a time of preparation, joy, and reflection leading up to Christmas. Whether you’re a teacher planning classroom activities, a youth leader organizing group fun, or a parent looking for festive family games, these Advent games will bring the season to life. Here’s a list of ideas that are fun, meaningful, and easy to set up.
This is the perfect time to stock up on Advent games or the full year of Catholic Kids Bulletins!
1. Nativity Story Charades
Get ready to laugh as players silently act out scenes from the Nativity story. From shepherds “tending sheep” to angels announcing good news, this game has something for everyone. You’ll love seeing how creative (and occasionally silly) the interpretations can get! It’s a fantastic way to retell the Christmas story while having fun. Students can create their own word list; I like to ask each student to think of a person, place, thing, and idea connected to Advent. This will get you a quick set of words. Or, you could get these cards with the words ready to go. Just a heads-up, if the kids make the cards, you’ll need to go through and take out duplicates or you’ll have 10 cards that say, “Mary.”
2. “Who Am I?” Christmas Edition
In this game, each player has a card stuck to their forehead with the name of a Nativity character or Christmas figure, like Mary, Joseph, or the star of Bethlehem. Through yes-or-no questions, players try to figure out their identity. It’s a game of quick wit and big laughs. Once again, you can use these cards as a word bank or create your own.
3. Snowball Scripture Toss
Ask the students to read the Nativity story and choose one verse to copy onto a slip of paper. Then, have them crumple the slips into snowballs. Students can either toss the snowballs into a basket in an orderly manner or have fun throwing them across the room in a playful snowball fight.
Afterward, use the snowballs for engaging activities with the Bible verses:
- Open a Snowball: Students pick up a random snowball, open it, and read the verse to a partner.
- Summarize Together: With their partner, summarize the meaning of the verse.
- Find Their Verse: Keep searching through the snowballs until they find the verse they wrote.
- Challenge Activity: Work as a group to put the Bible verses in order, from the beginning of the Nativity story to the end.
This activity blends the fun and excitement of Advent with meaningful reflection on Scripture, creating a memorable and interactive way to engage with the Nativity story.
4. Shepherd’s Sheep Hunt
Let the kids take on the role of adorable little sheep as they hide around the room or playground while one person plays the shepherd. The shepherd’s job? To find and “gather” their sheep back into the fold! As each sheep is found, they can bleat, giggle, or even follow the shepherd to help find the others.
This game ties beautifully to the story of Jesus as the Good Shepherd who lovingly seeks out every lost sheep. It’s also a sweet nod to the fluffy sheep nestled in the Nativity scene. The kids will love being “cute little sheepies” while learning about God’s tender care for each of us. Simple, active, and packed with meaning, this game is a favorite for younger groups!
5. Advent Trivia
Advent Trivia is a fantastic way to get into the holiday spirit while learning about the traditions and history of this special season! Kids like to feel wise, so any trivia game can be fun. Here’s a set of Advent Trivia that you can use. I’m going to use them as a walk-the-room activity before we play any Advent games with the trivia. Here’s how I’ll use it first in my class.
- Post Question cards around the room and corresponding Information cards nearby.
- Give students a worksheet or notecard to write answers.
- Divide students into pairs or small groups.
- Students walk around, reading the Information cards to find clues and write answers.
- Review answers as a class and discuss the Information cards to deepen understanding.
This Advent activity gets everyone moving, thinking, and celebrating together!
6. Bible Verse Scramble
Give your group a meaningful challenge by cutting out words from an Advent-related Bible verse and mixing them up. Teams race to put the verse in the correct order. This game adds a little brainpower to the fun and helps everyone focus on the true meaning of the season. You could ask the kids to create their own scramble with index cards, or download this Isaiah 9:6 worksheet and scramble and help the kids memorize a great Christmas prophecy.
7. Christmas Bingo
Who doesn’t love a good game of Bingo? Create cards filled with Advent and Christmas-themed words like “Bethlehem,” “Joy,” and “Angel.” For extra flair, use holiday-themed markers like mini candy canes or gold stars. A classic with an Advent twist, this is one of those Advent games that never gets old. I have an Advent Bingo game that you could download, or you could print a blank board, ask the kids to work together, brainstorm 25 words, and add them to their own boards.
8. Advent Word Search Challenge
Word searches are classic, but this one has a seasonal twist. It’s a relaxing but engaging activity that helps reinforce the meaning of Advent vocabulary. This set has words related to each week of the Advent wreath. The kids can find the words, then brainstorm and discuss to figure out why the words are connected to the candle’s theme.
