How I Get Students Leading Class Prayer from Day One

I hope you’re having a relaxing summer! But if your brain is starting to drift back toward lesson plans and bulletin boards, I wanted to share a couple of my favorite back-to-school prayer activities to help students when leading class prayer.

The ACTS Prayer Activities & Worksheets and the HUGE Prayer PowerPoint are both great tools to help your students understand and practice prayer in a meaningful way. They both help to get students leading prayer in class from the first day of school!

How do you include student choice in class prayer? PowerPoint Prayer Slides

Leading Class Prayer with Structure

I use both of these resources during the first week of school to set the tone for our classroom prayer routine. The Prayer PowerPoint becomes part of our daily morning routine all year long—it’s simple, consistent, and helps students grow more confident in leading prayer. I also like to revisit the ACTS Prayer lessons at the start of second semester. It’s a perfect time to review the four types of prayer (Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, Supplication) and refresh our classroom prayer habits.

Leading class prayer: Incorporating student choice into prayer time makes the experience more meaningful and engaging for kids. When students get to choose how they pray—whether it’s picking a prayer style from the ACTS model, choosing a prayer intention, or helping select the song or Scripture for the day—they feel more involved and connected. It also gives them a chance to express their personal faith in a way that feels authentic. This variety keeps prayer time fresh and allows students to explore different ways of communicating with God, helping them discover what feels most natural and powerful for their own spiritual growth.

Catholic Kids Bulletins

The FREE Printable Catholic Kids Bulletin worksheets match up to the weekly Mass readings in the Catholic Church. There are coloring pages that match the weekly Gospel reading. There are Mass activities throughout the month, as well as Psalm copy work and a word search. In addition, the order of the liturgy of the Mass along the top of each bulletin also helps kids follow along during Mass. Next, they can learn the order and structure of the Mass. Finally, a coloring page about a Catholic Saint teaches about Catholic History and saints. For example, these are terrific to teach at Mass, in addition to a pre-teaching activity to help prepare your students for the Sunday Mass.
