Lent Lessons Made Easy: Bible Stories, Art, and Games

Lent starts soon! Here’s a quick list of my favorite Lent Lessons and resources to use with your students.

Lent Lesson Plan

Lent & Holy Week Lesson Plan: This packet provides a clear overview of Lent and Holy Week. Students read and summarize the story of Jesus’ crucifixion and death from the Bible. These Lent Lessons are perfect for students new to the faith, as they highlight the big picture and the most important events of Holy Week. Even students who have heard these stories for years discover new details and meaning. I’ve used this packet with students from 7th–12th grades, and the lessons can be completed at each student’s ability level.

Blackout Poetry

Blackout Poetry: **FREE** I use this lesson as a conclusion to the Lent packet. After studying and summarizing heavy stories from the Bible, students have a chance to reflect and create art that connects with the emotions of the events. Some students are familiar with blackout poetry and dive right in. Others may need guidance, so I suggest circling 5–10 keywords and coloring the rest of the page. I remind them that free-form poetry doesn’t require rules or rhymes. This project allows students of all abilities to express themselves creatively. While students work, we watch Episodes 8 and 9 of the Bible Miniseries. Students who enjoy detailed artwork can spend extra time creating, while others can relax and watch. Everyone ends with a meaningful review of Jesus’ Passion.and watch. All the students have a review of Jesus’ Passion.

Lent and Holy Week Sorting Cards

Lent and Holy Week Sorting Cards: These Lent Lessons sorting cards are versatile. Students begin by matching titles and explanations or putting events in order. Once confident, we play games with the cards: racing to sequence events, playing Memory or Baby Monkey Astronaut, or even sorting the cards with their feet! While the groans are loud, the laughter shows they secretly love it.
