✨ Praying the Rosary with Kids: Simple and Meaningful Ideas
Praying the Rosary with Kids (and Trying Not to Lose Beads or Patience)
Once upon a time, I thought it would be a great idea to try praying the Rosary with kids in my class.
Every day, I’d see these kids showing kindness and curiosity about faith, and I figured, sure—we can handle a Rosary together. Peaceful prayer time. Holy music in the background. Everyone calm and focused. Easy.
Of course…that was a ridiculous expectation….but before I get to the rest of the story, remember that you can order a Catholic Kids Bulletin BOOK before the new Liturgical Year Starts!
Back to the story…I got started and passed out the rosaries. Within about thirty seconds, one was being swung around like a lasso, another kid had looped theirs into a necklace, and then someone’s broke completely—beads everywhere.
Because of that, I realized maybe we needed a new strategy. Less “everyone ‘peacefully’ holding a rosary” and more “everyone still praying when we’re done.”
So I tried again. This time we used a Rosary slideshow—big, beautiful images, a bead tracker on each slide, and short Scripture lines for each Hail Mary. The kids could actually see where we were in the prayer instead of guessing. Less beads, less chaos, still prayer.
After that, I added options. Some kids drew or colored while we prayed. Others did Rosary word searches with words tied to each mystery. (If their hands are busy, their mouths are quieter. It’s science. 😂) Suddenly, it wasn’t about keeping them perfectly still—it was about keeping them engaged.
We even started praying the Rosary in random places—on the bus, in the car, while waiting for pickup. Sometimes it’s one decade, sometimes a “speed Rosary” before the end of class. The point is, it happens.
Finally, I stopped stressing about doing it “right.” Praying the Rosary with kids doesn’t have to look picture-perfect. It can be loud, messy, half-finished, and still meaningful.
If you want to try the same tools that finally worked for me, you can grab my Rosary PowerPoint (with gorgeous images, Scripture verses, and a moving bead tracker) and my Rosary Word Search Bundle (with word lists that match each mystery). They’re easy to use with a class or at home, and they make praying the Rosary with kids feel doable—even on the busiest days.
