How We Celebrated Catholic Saint Patrick with Traps and Truth
For Saint Patrick’s Day, I’ve been talking to my daughter about the real Catholic Saint Patrick—not just the one who plays tricks and leaves sparkles all over the house. We’ve been reading books about his life and coloring a few printable pages I found online. But let’s be honest: the more entertaining activities involve setting leprechaun traps and eating green kettle corn. Mmmmmm.
Leprechaun Traps: Crafty Fun Meets Sneaky Saints
Here’s a look back at last year’s trap. It was a simple design, and the stickers were my daughter’s only contribution since she was still too little to help much with the crafting. The idea was that the leprechaun would be lured up a colorful ladder and stand on the lid, which would fall into the box—trapping him inside. And of course, once caught, he’d have to give up all his gold. Shockingly, we didn’t catch him.
This year’s trap is a bit more sophisticated. We used a Kleenex box covered in green paper (my daughter is getting much better with scissors!). The top is decorated with rainbow-colored Nuudles—those amazing cornstarch-based foam peanuts that stick together when wet. Technically, you’re supposed to dip them in water, but licking them is way more fun (and slightly gross in that preschooler-approved way).
Tonight, the leprechaun will be lured under the box by shiny treats. When he hits the marker, the box will drop and trap him. So sneaky! After my daughter goes to sleep, I plan to leave some leprechaun footprints, scatter a few gold coins and chocolates, and maybe turn the milk green for extra fun.
Green Kettle Corn & Sneaky Snackers
While reading about Saint Patrick, the Catholic saint who brought Christianity to Ireland, we snacked on some homemade green kettle corn. I used our favorite sweet popcorn recipe and added green food coloring to the oil. It turned out great—though I barely got any. My daughter kept snatching it out of my hand before it reached my mouth. She’s clearly channeling her inner leprechaun. (Ha! I know—I’m hilarious.)
From Shamrocks to Saints: Making the Day Meaningful
All the silly fun helps build anticipation and joy, but it also gives us a chance to talk about the real Saint Patrick—his courage, his love for God, and how he used the shamrock to explain the Holy Trinity. That’s why I created the Saint Patrick Reading Comprehension & Coloring Activities Bundle, to help families and teachers blend faith, fun, and learning on this feast day.
